Does a URL domain name make a difference ?

Picking out a domain name can be really fun. A domain name is the URL address that people type into their browser to get to your website. By now the internet has been around for a while and in my opinion most common urls have already been taken. Some people even make it their sole business to buy urls and resell them at higher markups.

Some lucky people have bought domain names early on in the .com boom, only to find years later that the URL they held on to has grown to be highly sought after! Sometimes if a company really wants the name they will pay thousands and even millions of dollars to own it. Imagine if you had bought apple.(com) before Apple did! Now before you rush off and start buying domain names take note that you still have to pay a yearly renewal fee for the domain name.

If a users forgets to pay to renew their domain name (or choses not to) then guess what! The domain name is up for grabs.

You may have already tried to buy a domain name only to find out it was taken! You tried again with something different and that was also taken! Domain properties are being gobbled up quickly!

So what does this mean ?

It means if you want to buy a domain name, you need to get creative. If you own a plumbing company you can’t just buy plumbing .(com). When I look for domain names I remember these points: is it specific to my business, is it EASY to remember, how does it look written out on a business card, is it easy to tell someone over the phone.

Simplicity is key – but a lot can be said for a creative URL name that leaves a lasting impression.
